From Prompt to Practice: Real-World Applications of Generative AI in Specialty Palliative Care

Key Message: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can improve efficiency and effectiveness of specialty palliative care (SPC), allowing teams to enhance clinical care delivery. Evidence regarding GenAI use in SPC will be examined and participants will learn a strategy for leveraging ChatGPT to create a personalized approach to utilizing GenAI in clinical care.

Abstract:

Background: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has been evolving at a rapid pace and large language models (e.g. ChatGPT) are widely available. (1) However, evidence shows that specialty palliative care (SPC) clinicians and teams face unique challenges in GenAI adoption and application given the complex needs and ethical considerations of our field. (2) This interactive session will combine didactics and audience participation to present current evidence and strategy for Gen AI use in clinical care.

Session Description and Format: Multidisciplinary clinicians with diverse GenAI expertise from several academic institutions will facilitate this session in three parts:

1. Didactic Presentation: Panelists will present a brief evidence-based overview of current GenAI use in patient identification, resource allocation, workflow optimization and prognostication, reviewing benefits and limitations. (3,4)

2. Panel

Discussion: Panelists will describe their personal and professional experiences with GenAI followed by discussion of a real-life patient case that intersects with GenAI utilization. Participants will vote on best approaches to care via a real-time audience-response system (e.g. Slido). Panelists will provide expert commentary, linking the case to broader themes in clinical use of GenAI.

3. Real-Time GenAI Demonstration: Throughout the session authors will collect key clinical, operational and educational GenAI use cases, tools, and prompts from both panelists and participants to create a collective summary. Leveraging this information, participants will learn how to create a ChatGPT-powered personalized summary for use in their own setting.

Conclusion: Panelists will share a brief reflection on GenAI’s evolving role in specialty palliative care and vision for the future. The session will close with open discussion between participants and panelists emphasizing practical and ethical challenges in applying GenAI to patient care. A summary with key takeaways from this session, including a clinician-centered practical guide for ChatGPT, will be available via a QR code displayed at the conclusion.
