Completing training in both oncology and hospice and palliative medicine (HPM), Dr. Buss has built a career advancing the clinical delivery of palliative care and enhancing education about palliative care at all levels of medical education and across various specialties.
She has developed and studied models for delivery of palliative care at three different academic medical centers, focusing on outpatient setting. In the process of creating and expanding access to palliative care in the ambulatory setting, she has endeavored to understand how and when to integrate palliative care into patient care by assessing the impact of various innovative models of palliative care clinic on patient outcomes. Over time, the focus of this work has shifted from primarily patients with cancer to understanding the needs of patients, family caregivers and referring providers of various specialties for patients with non-malignant serious illnesses.
Her scholarly work has also involved studying the nature and quality of palliative care education within medical training and then working to provide better palliative care education to physician and physician trainees of all specialties. She has also contributed to the specialty education by launching a Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) fellowship at two academic medical centers and mentoring numerous trainees and junior faculty.
