Dr. Porter is a physician-researcher in the Division of Pediatric Supportive and Palliative Care at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, her fellowship in Pediatric Complex Care at Rainbow Babies’ and Children’s Hospital at Case Western Reserve University, and her fellowship in Pediatric Palliative Care at Boston Children’s Hospital/Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
As a physician-scientist trained clinically in pediatrics, complex care, and palliative care, and with a PhD in anthropology, she has expertise in the care of children with serious illness and their families and a methodologic propensity to notice what unseen by the medical team. Her research focuses on illuminating unseen experiences of family caregivers of children with serious illness and medical complexity to better inform the medical team and in turn, enable the healthcare system to more effectively support those caregivers. Over the past decade of bearing witness to families’ caregiving experiences, she has come to recognize that family caregivers of children with serious illness and medical complexity are strikingly under-supported. Her current project aims to understand experiences of respite, rest, and recharge among family caregivers and use experience-based co-design to reimagine the respite care system. She is committed to applying experience-near methods and social science theory to advance the science of caregiver support.
Alongside this passion for finding better ways to support children with medical complexity and their families, Amy loves practicing yoga, spending time outside, and hanging with her husband and their four young daughters.
