Assistant Professor, Palliative Care
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center
Dr. Nicole Dussault is an Assistant Professor and palliative care physician at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington. Her research focuses on improving care for patients with serious illness through interdisciplinary interventions. Prior to moving to Washington, she completed her internal medicine residency and palliative care fellowship at Duke University and earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Her prior research has included developing machine learning algorithms to predict sepsis in hospitalized patients; developing a nursing-led, trauma-informed care training program to improve emergency department providers’ comfort in caring for survivors of sexual assault; and leading a pilot chaplain-based intervention that improved advance care planning documentation in primary care. Her most recent work involved partnering with addiction medicine and pharmacy experts to develop a palliative care opioid-prescribing workflow and educational sessions on buprenorphine and substance use disorder, leading to improved provider comfort with risk assessment, safer prescribing practices, and buprenorphine management. Dr. Dussault’s work has been recognized with the Duke Califf Resident Research Award, the Stead Research Award, and the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation Young Investigator Award.
