Mary Ersek is a retired faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania Schools of Nursing and Medicine. She also was a Senior Scientist with the Department of Veterans Affairs. For 30 years, Dr. Ersek led an interdisciplinary research program focused on pain and palliative care, with an emphasis on older adults with dementia and those residing in nursing homes. Educational resources resulting from her work are used around the world to improve the care for seriously ill older adults. Most recently, Dr. Ersek served as a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on the Quality of Care in Nursing Homes.
