Felix M. Rivera Mercado, MD DABFM (he/him/his)

Felix M. Rivera Mercado, MD is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with subspecialty certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and over a decade of experience in academic medicine, clinical research, and health system leadership. He is currently an attending physician in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he provides inpatient consultation services, participates in clinical research, and teaches learners across multiple disciplines, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, nurse practitioners, and social work trainees.

Dr. Rivera Mercado completed his Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center and previously served as Interim Director of the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Program at Lenox Hill Hospital. In this role, he led administrative operations, supported Joint Commission and quality improvement initiatives, and served as a collaborative physician for advanced practice clinicians. His leadership experience is complemented by a strong academic foundation, including service as Chief Resident during his family medicine residency.

His scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed publications in geriatric psychiatry, multiple national and regional conference presentations, invited lectures on symptom management and end-of-life care, and authorship of book chapters in Magill’s Medical Guide. Dr. Rivera Mercado’s research background includes critical care and health services research through the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program.

Fluent in English and Spanish, Dr. Rivera Mercado is recognized for his commitment to culturally responsive, patient-centered care and for advancing interdisciplinary collaboration in the care of patients with serious and life-limiting illness.
