Dr. Marie Bakitas is a University Professor, and Associate Director, Center for Palliative and Supportive Care at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is internationally recognized in palliative care and symptom science. Focused on reducing suffering and enhancing quality of life for persons with advanced illness and family caregivers--especially in rural areas--her early tele-health palliative care model ENABLE (Educate, Nurture, Advise, Before Life Ends), has led to practice and policy changes. She is disseminating ENABLE for cancer and heart failure patients in the Deep South and internationally in Singapore and Iran. As a senior investigator she has a special focus on mentorship including her roles as co-lead, Career Engagement Core, UAB Cancer in Persistent Poverty Network (U54), PI, T32 Improving Health Across the Lifespan (iHEAL), and co-Chair, of the Palliative Care Committee in the SWOG Cancer Research Network. Dr. Bakitas serves as a co-investigator on the Engagement Core, ASCENT Palliative Care Consortium. She has over 220 data-based peer reviewed publications and numerous presentations that are disseminating her work nationally and internationally. She was the 2024 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine State of the Science Research Mentor of the Year.
