Katie L. Robinson, PhD, RN-BC, CHPN (she/her/hers)

Assistant Professor
CSU San Marcos

Katie Robinson, PhD, RN-BC, CHPN is an Assistant Professor of Nursing at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), the Palliative Care Specialty Faculty Lead and chair of the Palliative Care Curriculum Committee for the School of Nursing, and a member of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services’ Interprofessional Education Committee. In those roles, she guides the integration of comprehensive palliative care content throughout the nursing curriculum and co-leads interprofessional education efforts on the CSUSM campus. Katie remains active in the local and national hospice and palliative community, including recent service on the CHPN Situational Judgement Exam Development Committee for the Hospice and Palliative Nursing Certification Board. She is a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine's Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness and a sub-committee member of the Action Collaborative: Mapping Progress and Opportunities to Inform Priorities in Quality Serious Illness Research and Care. For the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care, she is the Faculty Director for IPE under the Hearst Foundation grant-funded project: Preparing California’s Healthcare Workforce in Palliative Care through Interprofessional Education; a course content developer; a member of the planning committee for the annual National Symposium for Academic Palliative Care Education & Research; and a faculty partner with the CSUSM campus partner. Her research focuses on early identification and assessment of palliative care needs by interprofessional palliative care teams to both increase collaboration among interprofessional palliative team members and improve comprehensive care for patients with serious illness and their families. Katie is the lead editor for the forthcoming Manual for Palliative Care: A Step-by-Step Guide for Acute Care Nurses (in press with Wiley, estimated publication in 2026).
