Laura (Brooke) Priest-Buckner, MSN, FNP-C, is a Family Nurse Practitioner with Carilion Clinic’s Palliative Medicine and Hospice programs in Roanoke, Virginia. She provides compassionate, comprehensive care to patients and families across multiple settings, including Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Carilion Center for Healthy Aging, and Carilion Clinic Hospice. In her current role, Brooke facilitates the day-to-day work for the General Inpatient (GIP) Hospice Program at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, ensuring that patients and families receive compassionate, goal-aligned care during the most critical stages of serious illness.
Brooke earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Liberty University, where she also completed minors in Nutrition and Crisis Counseling. She later obtained her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Family Practice from South University. Her background includes extensive clinical experience in both acute and community-based settings, with a focus on serious illness care, symptom management, and end-of-life support.
Brooke began her nursing career at Duke University Hospital, where she cared for patients with advanced pulmonary disease. She later transitioned to community hospice nursing with Good Samaritan Hospice, an experience that deepened her commitment to holistic, patient-centered end-of-life care. These roles laid the foundation for her current practice in palliative medicine and hospice at Carilion Clinic, where she now integrates both her acute care and community-based experience to support patients and interdisciplinary teams.
Brooke’s professional philosophy centers on the belief that patient-centered care extends beyond the disease process—it encompasses the emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs of individuals and their loved ones. She believes that supportive listening and compassionate presence are just as vital as medical intervention in promoting dignity and comfort at the end of life.
