Yale Palliative Care Program
Laura J. Morrison, MD is Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, serving as Associate Chief of Palliative Care, Director of Palliative Medicine Education, and Director, Yale Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship. She is a clinician-educator known for her leadership in and contributions to the development of physician fellowship training standards for hospice and palliative medicine (HPM) in the US. Since 2005, she’s participated in key national workgroups defining HPM Fellow Competences, an early HPM Toolkit of Assessment Methods, Entrustable Professional Activities, Curricular Milestones, and sequential sets of Reporting Milestones. Dr. Morrison has also worked within the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine to advance interprofessional innovation and scholarship in hospice and palliative care education as a founder of the annual Interactive Educational Exchange session and founding Chair of the Education Special Interest Group. She’s also collaborated with colleagues to present multiple educational sessions at the Annual Assembly on art museum teaching as a tool for building resilience and self-reflection in our trainees and teams. Dr. Morrison continues to focus on advancing trainee assessment for the field while also implementing and advancing local and national medical student and resident hospice and palliative care competencies and curricula. She also teaches nationally as a VitalTalk faculty member.
Dr. Morrison cares for patients as an attending physician on the Yale Palliative Care Consultation Service at Yale New Haven Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital. She finds great meaning in caring for patients facing the stresses and challenges that come with serious illness. In direct patient care, she has witnessed the significant gaps that exist in palliative care training for all clinicians. This continues to motivate her passion for educational leadership.
