Nurse Practitioner
Pediatric Advanced Care Team, Boston Children's Hospital
Lauren Xenakis is a nurse practitioner for the Pediatric Advanced Care Team at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Lauren received her bachelor of arts degree in Anthropology and Chemistry from Bowdoin College. Her senior honors thesis in Anthropology focused on the experiences of hospice nurses and volunteers in Midcoast Maine, which exposed her to both palliative care and the multitude of ways nurses support families. She then went on to pursue a second bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2013 from the University of Pennsylvania. Lauren worked as a registered nurse on a post-surgical/trauma/burn unit in Washington, DC and while there, initiated a program to provide integrative therapies to support pharmacological pain management for the post-operative and burn patients. Lauren then transitioned to working as a registered nurse in the Boston Children’s Hospital ED. She completed her master’s degree in nursing in 2021 and worked as a pediatric nurse practitioner at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Boston, caring for children with burns and cleft palates, before coming back to Boston Children’s to work as a nurse practitioner on the pediatric palliative care team. Her experience as a nurse in the ED informs her interest on the ways palliative care communication skills can be used to support children with serious illness throughout the hospital continuum.
