Dr. Stowers completed medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2010, followed by residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at The Ohio State University in 2013 and 2014, respectively. She is board certified in internal medicine and hospice and palliative medicine. Dr. Stowers specializes in teaching healthcare professionals how to engage in clear and compassionate conversations with seriously ill patients and their families about what matters most.
Dr. Stowers is an assistant professor of Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU). Her clinical work is devoted to treating the symptoms and stresses of patients living with serious illness. She is the Program Director for the OHSU Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship program, training the next generation of Hospice and Palliative Medicine specialists for Oregon. She is also an Associate Director of the OHSU Center for Ethics in Healthcare where she holds the inaugural Ronald W. Naito Directorship of Serious Illness Education and leads the TalkOregon Program, which aims to improve care for seriously ill Oregonians by empowering healthcare professionals to have clear and compassionate healthcare conversations.
Dr. Stowers is a distinguished faculty leader with VitalTalk, an internationally recognized organization teaching clinicians to communicate compassionately with seriously ill individuals where is involved in developing training courses and mentoring communication teachers; the impact of these activities will improve the ability of thousands of clinicians across the country to have better conversations with seriously ill patients and their families. In 2021, Dr. Stowers was awarded Fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, which is one of the highest honors the Academy can bestow. This honor is achieved by members whose professional activity is devoted to the practice of hospice and palliative medicine.
