Daniel Kadden, MD is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and an attending physician on the Pediatric Palliative Care Team at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). He completed his pediatric residency followed by a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, with focused training in serious illness communication, perinatal palliative care, and interdisciplinary education.
Dr. Kadden’s clinical work spans inpatient and outpatient settings, where he cares for children with complex, life-limiting conditions and supports families navigating high-stakes medical decision-making. His academic interests center on communication at critical junctures of care, particularly in the perinatal and neonatal periods, and serious illness communication education.
He is actively involved in medical education and curriculum development, serving in as the associate program director for the CHLA pediatric palliative care fellowship. His scholarly work includes qualitative and quantitative research examining clinician interpretation of neonatal birth plans, variability in delivery-room decision-making, and the role of palliative care in prenatally diagnosed complex fetal anomalies. He is engaged in ongoing efforts to translate research findings into practical frameworks for clinical practice.
In addition, Dr. Kadden is involved in innovative educational initiatives, including simulation-based training and the exploration of emerging technologies to improve serious illness communication skills among trainees. His work emphasizes reflective practice, psychological safety, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Through his clinical, educational, and research efforts, Dr. Kadden aims to advance compassionate, goal-concordant care for infants and children with serious illness while supporting families and healthcare teams during some of the most challenging moments in pediatric medicine.
