Dio Kavalieratos, PhD is the Division Director of the Division of Palliative Medicine at Emory University. Dr. Kavalieratos is a health services researcher whose work focuses on development, evaluation, and implementation of models of palliative care delivery in serious chronic illness. Dr. Kavalieratos has expertise in qualitative methods, patient-reported outcomes, clinical trials, and evidence synthesis. Dr. Kavalieratos received the 2019 Early Career Investigator Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), and he serves as Chair Elect of the AAHPM's Research Committee. Dr. Kavalieratos' work has been supported by a variety of public and private sources, including the National Palliative Care Research Center, AHRQ, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and NHLBI. His research has appeared in journals such as JAMA, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Journal of the American Heart Association, and Chest, among others. His work has been featured or he has been quoted by media outlets including the New York Times, Reuters, and STAT. Dr. Kavalieratos is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, and serves on the Steering Committee of the Palliative Care Research Cooperative Group. He is keenly interested in mentoring trainees of all disciplines and stages regarding research and quality improvement in palliative care.
