Clinical Instructor
Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles
I am an early-stage clinician-investigator at the University of California, Los Angeles in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine with clinical responsibilities in the divisions of critical care and cardiothoracic anesthesia. My research focuses on the communication dynamics, clinical norms, and institutional structures that influence key treatment decisions for critically ill patients, especially those in the perioperative period or who require organ transplant and/or mechanical circulatory support (e.g., extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, ECMO). Using qualitative and mixed methods, I study how these high-intensity, resource-intensive, life-prolonging interventions are both initiated and limited. The goal of my research program is to understand the decision-making and ethical challenges faced in these settings in order to design interventions to improve the goal-concordance and quality of care for these seriously ill patients.
