Professor
UCLA
I am a Professor of Medicine and practicing general internist who performs research in quality of care and
clinical ethics. My research focuses on understanding barriers and facilitators to match care with patient goals
and to effect changes that result in better outcomes at the end of life, and optimal distribution of and receipt of
care. This has led me to study advance care planning and how it is best implemented and to measure its
effects using process and outcome measures. I am UCLA Medical Director for Advance Care Planning and
chair of the Ronald Reagan-UCLA Ethics Committee. My current efforts focus on building health system
advance care planning structures and measuring and improving the quality of care for vulnerable older
persons. Educational efforts focus on training physician fellows, residents and medical students in health
services, clinical ethics and primary care.
