Dr. Bekelman is an internist, psychiatrist and palliative care specialist who is Attending Physician at the Rocky Mountain Regional VAMC and Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Colorado. He studies ways to improve quality of life for persons with serious illnesses such as heart failure and chronic lung diseases and enjoys mentoring the next generation of patient-oriented researchers. His research expertise is in measuring and improving quality of life and testing novel health care delivery interventions using clinical trials. He has tested telephone, team (nurse and social worker), and peer (layperson) interventions to integrate early palliative care and psychosocial care into the outpatient setting. His work is recognized for articulating and advancing the role of palliative care in heart failure and inspiring care that is more person-centered. He enjoys mentoring and is funded as a patient-oriented research mentor by the NIH National Institute on Aging. He directs a VITAL-VET, a VA center for dissemination and implementation science. He is a competitive open water swimmer.
