Joan M. Cain, MSN, FNP-BC, ACHPN is a Nurse Practitioner, Adjunct faculty at the Medical
University of South Carolina (MUSC). She works with the Palliative care department in an over
700 bed inpatient hospital setting and in conjunction with the multidisciplinary teams of health
care professional to provide excellent care. Ms. Cain is part of the team that received the Circle
of Life citation of honor award, given by the American Hospital Association (AHA), and
personally received the Caring Spirit award, presented by the Pastoral Care Services at MUSC
that same year. She is a member of the Hospice and Palliative Nurse Association (HPNA) and
has published several articles as well as the HIV/AIDS chapter in the HPNA Compendium of
Nursing Care for common serious illness. Ms. Cain has been in healthcare for over 35 years
and her focus has always been on the quality of life for her patients and herself. Joan enjoys
exercising, reading and time with family for her self care.
